Description:
Following an offer by the late Rajah Sir S.R.M. Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad to transfer to a residential teaching university, if one were founded, the Sri Minakshi College for higher instruction in English, the Minakshi Tamil and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit colleges which he had established and maintained, the government of Madras passed an act in 1928 accepting the offer and provided for the establishment of Annamalai University.

The University is located on a 750 acre site at Annamalainagar, a town on the SE coast of India. Its territorial jurisdiction does not extend beyond a 10-mile radius from the university convocation hall in Annamalainagar.

The Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education, now known as the Directorate of Distance Education, was established in 1969. The Directorate offers the following subjects at degree and master levels: Law, Psychology, History, Sociology, Economics, Literature, Commerce, Mathematics, Education, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology. Postgraduate Diplomas are offered in Law, Management, Chemical Process, Instrumentation and Control, Concrete Technology and Design of Concrete Structure. A certificate course is also offered in Automobile Technology.
